A Short History of Argentine Tango Part 2

So why were men dancing with men? Simply because there were so few women (other than the Ladies of Negotiable Affection) and all of these men yearned to meet a respectable woman, marry her, and raise a family. Since the women had their pick of the men, they looked for the best dancers at social occasions. In the housing conglomerates called conventillos, there were social dances every evening Continue reading

Best lead is no lead at all

I very often say to my male students: “The Best Lead is No Lead at all”. That sounds a bit funny and controversial at first look. But let me tell you what I mean: The Man should lead his partner the way she does not feel any pulling, pushing, carrying around, hand squeezing or wrist twisting. But instead She should feel like she is dancing by herself enjoying the freedom of movement and the beauty of rhythm, music and motion. And it all should be in sync with you, Gentleman, the way you want it and the way you intend it to be. It should be a very subtle, very sophisticated lead, in other words “no lead at all”. – Egor Belashov, Dance with me Toronto

Egor Belashov in a Commercial, Russia 2001

Dear Dance with me Toronto and friends!

Recently I told you a story of the 1st dance studio I founded in Murmansk, Russia in 1997 – Dance Club “Favorit”, that operates till present time (you can read an article about it and watch a video clicking here).

Today I would like to share something else. In 2001 a father of my student, who happened to be a producer on local TV,  approached me with an interesting idea Continue reading

Latin Nights at Harmony Club

Dance with me Toronto students and teachers have already been to Harmony Club. But this time – March 13th 2015 – it was a special evening – Latin Night (they schedule it once in a couple of month I assume).

DJ played lots of lovely Latin songs – Cha-Chas, Rumbas, Salsas, Merengues, Bachatas and even Argentine Tango and Twist.  We had lots of fun! And taking into consideration how affordable it is and how huge the floor is and how conveniently it is located – we can say it is one of the best places in big Toronto to be on Friday night.

There were a couple of nice personal touches: Harmony Club offered us to submit a wish list of songs we would love to hear as well as acknowledged people who had Birthdays in March with lovely songs and cakes for birthday people and company. Well done, Harmony Club!

Let us give you more details so you know where they are. Harmony Club is located at a banquet facility of Peter and Paul Church at 231 Milner Avenue, Toronto (hwy 401 & Markham Rd.).

They are open every Friday 7:00 pm to midnight. And looks like the place is quite popular, especially with an older crowed – it is normally  packed.
The floor is huge, the facility was renovated recently and looks very decent. They have buffet dinner from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, the food was delicious, plates were full. Taking into account the the tickets with dinner are just $17.
You can reserve  tables in advance.
