American Smooth

American Smooth, or American style ballroom, was developed in North America and is characterized by the presence of constant openings and changes in the couple’s hold. Just to compare: in International (English) style of ballroom the frame never changes and the couple stays in this closed hold throughout the dance. American smooth is showy and expressive. It is a mix of Ballroom and Broadway as the founders of this style of dance are considered to be the iconic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

During a competition, couples try to showcase their creativity and shapes and signature moves – in this style, you rarely see a similar routine at the same time on the dance floor. It is fun to watch and fun to dance because each professional couple has a chance to contribute their vision and tricks to the style. American Smooth is comprised of 4 dances: Slow Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz.
